soundscape saturday :: ade fenton

Along a month ago, I was listening to the past podcast from Electronic Explorations and heard what seemed to be the newest, fresh mix from a gentleman name Ade Fenton.  The mix held on to my industrial vein the whole journey and carries with me as a reminder that my roots are still as torn and  chaotic as they are smooth and warm.  You can find this mix located on the download Rob Booth with Ade Fenton.  If you enjoy an edge with your beat, this one is a keeper.

"Ade Fenton has been making music for the last 12 years, establishing himself as a respected record producer and remixer for artists including Gary Numan, Slash, IAMX, Niki Gravino, Parralox and Motor.  He has amassed over 30 EPs and remixes on his own techno labels Advanced and Perverter, as well as releases on some of the worlds leading techno imprints such as Potential, Ground, Impact Mechanics, Gynoid, IF?, Primate and Materials.  In 2006, he coproduced and coengineered Gary Numan’s Jagged album, released to huge critical acclaim and reaching number three in the BBC indie chart.  Fenton released his debut artist album Artificial Perfect on his industrial electronic label Submission in 2007, securing a UK Top 75 chart single with The Leather Sea and regular plays of the spectacular video for his single Healing on MTV2, then in 2008 he once again teamed up with Gary Numan for a new double release Jagged Edge.   The pair are currently in the studio producing two brand new albums Dead Son Rising and Splinter, both set for release in 2011.  Ade is a busy international techno dj with a schedule that has taken him across the globe.  He has regularly appeared on BBC Radio One, recording dj sets for their 'Live At Maida Vale', Mary Anne Hobbs programmes, and has been resident DJ at the United Kingdom's leading techno club Atomic Jam for over 10 years."

"Gorilla vs. Bear is a Texas based music blog."

"In 2008, Gorilla vs. Bear was recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the web’s “Best Music Blogs” in the publication’s annual Best of Rock issue. GvsB was also voted “Blog of the Year” in URB Magazine’s annual readers poll, beating out such luminaries as Kanye West and the Huffington Post. In 2009, GvsB was named one of the “25 Best Music Websites” by The Independent UK, alongside famous weblogs eMusic, the Hype Machine, Pitchfork, and Kanye West.  In addition, Gorilla vs. Bear hosts an award winning, weekly 2 hour show on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, and frequently presents live shows in Dallas, Austin, and beyond.  We enjoy documenting our favorite artists via various antiquated photographic media, prompting the Village Voice to proclaim, “Gorilla vs Bear may have the Polaroid mugshot game on Kryptonite lock.”

soundscape saturday :: jeekoos

Jeekoos
DubFront Records
"(the English spelling of the Polish word Dzikus,
loosely translated as “a feral woodsman”)
crept into the Chicago music scene playing bass in punk bands
and producing four track hiphop and breakbeat type madness.
Always a seeker of fresh musical experiences, Jeekoos
found himself at a party near the end of the century. It was there
that he encountered jungle music. Soon after, he discovered
Part Time Sucker Radio – a consistent source of jungle, breakbeats and DnB.
Impressed by the show’s selections of styles and sounds,
Jeekoos became a regular listener, then a contributor,
then a freakin’ resident dj. When he ran up on Dubstep,
with its intensity, gnarly basslines and attention to detail,
he naturally incorporated it into his sets and production style.
He crafts tunes and mixes that are nothing short of block rocking.
Jeekoos also props up Chicago’s lowdown sounds with sick event flyers
and web design and is the man behind the MidwestDubstep.com forum.
Respect to tha Wubmaster!"

Vote for Jeekoos in the semi-finals to play Lollapalooza!

soundscape saturday :: electronic explorations

Electronic Explorations, in the company of Rob Booth as we travel
through electronic music’s hottest property, a deviously crafted
patchwork of carefully sewn rhythms, sonic contortions and
delicate melodies.  Dubstep, minimal electronica, techno and
advanced soundscapes.  Producers who rarely see the light of day,
too busy in their own homes, making some of the most arresting,
forward thinking and intelligent music.
If you like your music experimental, uncompromising, hand crafted
and eerie, mathematical and heavy on the bass then look no further.

soundscape saturday :: MUTEK

MUTEK is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the
dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music,
and audio visual art. Its mandate is to provide a platform for the
most original and visionary artists currently working in their fields,
with the intent of providing an outlet of initiation and discovery for the
audiences we seek to develop.

MUTEK’s principal activity is the annual presentation of its namesake
festival, which has taken place in Montreal since 2000.  Since its first
edition, the MUTEK festival has distinguished itself as an international
rendezvous for original and avantgarde programming. In terms of
content, the festival’s range strives to be diverse, with interests in both
the experimental and the playful sides of digital creativity.  MUTEK’s
programming intends to create a sonic space that can support
innovation in new electronic music and digital art.  This is a world of
constant evolution and incessant refinement – the “MU” in MUTEK
refers consciously to the notion of “mutation”.

soundscape saturday :: juke music

“Is there a difference between Chicago Booty House, Ghetto Tech,
and Juke Music? The answer is Yes, there is a HUGE difference."
read full article authored by DJV

Ghetto/Booty House, Ghettotech; Juke is Original House Music.
Juke is a type of Chicago House which started being recognized in its
own right from around 1992 onwards.  It features minimal 808 and
909 drum machine driven tracks.  Few are using this genre to its full
potential artistically.  The template of classic Chicago House music
(primarily, Percolator by Cajmere), has usually been made on very
minimal equipment with little or no effects.  It usually features a 4 to
the floor kick drum (full sounding, but not too long or distorted) along
with Roland 808 and 909 synthesized tom tom sounds, minimal use of
analogue synths, and short, slightly dirty sounding (both sonically and
lyrically) vocal samples, often repeated in various ways.  Also
common are 808 and 909 clap sounds, and full verses and choruses.

"Atop lushly warped RandB synths, stuttering, mutated 2-step drum
patterns and deep subbass that drops in and out without warning,
a pitched down vocal, and measuredly repeats.  The already
disorienting formula becomes even wilder midway through when the
vocal is suddenly pitched up and the initial woozy pattern is fed
amphetamines: words repeat until it starts to sound like a slum ocean.
Which is not a bad metaphor for the footwork oeuvre, music obsessed
with changing dynamics, and all the manic tendencies you would expect
from the children of trap music and ghetto house."
quote from Stephen Kerr on A Love Letter to Chicago Juke

soundscape saturday :: n5MD

n5MD
Emotional Experiments in Sound

n5MD began as a minidisc label,
the label name meaning - no fives, minidiscs.
When Sony DADC Austria stopped manufacturing
pre recorded minidiscs, and when getting them manufactured
by Sony DADC Japan was too expensive to consider,
n5MD changed over to compact discs,
continuing to release a few 7 inch records.
Much of the back catalog is available for purchase
in MP3 format from the label website.
