Life Lessons From Bo

1. Make Eye Contact
I cannot stress enough how important I feel it is to look someone in the eye. Everyone. From your loved ones to store clerks & bank tellers. Treat everyone like your equal. I also find eye contact immensely attractive. It shows you’re assured & open & I dig that.
2. Remember Facts About Other People
This ties into ‘be a good listener’ which I think everyone loves in a person. I also feel it’s important to remember the anecdotes & facts people tell you. I’m not talking just birthdays & phone numbers. When someone remembers that I take my coffee black or that I once had a cat named Killer, I know they’re a good person. I know sometimes it feels this way, but not everyone is talking just to hear the sound of their own voice, sometimes people are trying to connect. Find those people & connect.
3. Have Individuality & Confidence In Dress
I like when a person looks comfortable in their own skin. I don’t care if you dress conservative or eccentric, so long as it expresses who you are as a person & you look like you chose your look because it makes you happy & not because it’s what is expected.
4. Love What You Love
SB & I went on a rant about this the other day & I kept shouting “LOVE WHAT YOU LOVE!” It is my new life motto. I loathe when people automatically reject something because they think it would be lame to like that something. I would much rather someone vehemently hate something I love for their own personal reasons than agree with me because they think they’re supposed to. No more guilty pleasures. Love what you love without shame.
5. SHOW ENTHUSIASM!
Everyone I truly love sometimes gets so overwhelmed by their excitement that they start shouting or typing in CRAZY CAPS. I adore this trait. I spent most of my early 20s acting like I was too cool to get excited about something unless I was drunk. That’s silly. Giggle, clap, jump up & down. True honest enthusiasm is endearing & infectious.
6. Be Willing To Change
No matter what convictions you have now, accept that life is change. You will change, your circumstances will change, roll with it. Allow yourself to grow & evolve. Don’t stick stubbornly to a belief or idea just because it’s something you believe now. If it’s meant to stick, it’ll stick on it’s own. Just be willing to change. Keep this motto that Cher recites in Mermaids close to your heart: Life is change. Death is living in the past or staying in one place too long.
7. Accept That Other People Are Better Than You
Do what you love, even if you’re not the best. This is difficult for alphas to accept. I’ve given up many a project because I wasn’t instantly awesome at the task. Keep trying, improve & accept that doing what you love is just that; it’s not being the best, it’s being fulfilled. That being said, if you really truly suck at something, & sometimes you will, maybe give it up & try something else.
8. Be Spontaneously Affectionate
Tell people you love that you love them, but also show them that you love them. Hug, hold hands, link arms. When a friend overwhelms you with their adorableness, tell them. Respect that some people don’t respond well to physical affection & find other ways to let them know they’re loved. Do all this freely, generously, often.
9. Stick Up For Yourself
Just as you should question your convictions, you should also be skilled at defending them. Don’t let anyone talk you out of something you truly believe. Respect their differing opinion, listen, absorb, but don’t sacrifice your opinions to appease another. I would also add that you should pick your debates, don’t vehemently argue every difference. Sometimes it’s fine to let someone go on about something you disagree with. You’ll learn a differing view & maybe it’s not worth the effort to dispute their opinion.
10. Love Yourself Best
This sounds selfish, but it’s not. Remember what RuPaul says: If you can’t love yourself, how the hell you gonna love somebody else? Love others, give yourself to others, trust others, but remember that you have to love yourself best so you can give well to the people in your life. Have fun with yourself, enjoy your own company, challenge & be proud of yourself.

We gathered from a deeper slumber,
pushed the grandeur aside for wonder.

Ellie and Renee still continue to inspire me with their
strength and beauty in this world.
This is for all three of them.
I have just stepped behind for a moment because there

While there have been a handful of responses to this post,
this one is like a secret to share with you.

mellifluous missive. Accept a paean and enocomium to the inglenook,
scintillated sempiternally, lest, inured and etiolated,
or immolated by propinquity the cynosure of serendipitous epiphany
imbues ebulliance and effervescence to the ensuing imbroglio!
In ubragaceous syzygy, from a potomophilious palimpest,
a nebulous polis, I relate a riparian rhapsody, a sussourus path incipient,
fugageous and then plain to see plying the pelagic plain.
But it is neither at the horizon nor the shore,
but in the offing that the terpsichorean talisman toils.
A plethora of proud puffs have powered a panoply of peregrinations
as ripples redolent of roses restore and relate the returning rover.
And as the boat approaches,
ethereal and adroit whispers adumbrate the enticing
and enchanting of a lithe ingenue.
the harbour convenes and conjoins a symbiosis of airborne spirits and

The recent finds of a candy apple red and ivory pinstripe
cotton knit, had my head a whirl to use for some designs.
I had a helping hand at the cutting from a pixie, and after
the seams were sewn, this is what landed on the hangers.

There is a compartment of sensibility where the newest
collection for Spring/Summer 2012 has evolved.. and it
begins with a word, entelechy
We grasp an idea of philosophical beginnings
to form a vintage, fable inspired vision.
As old or young as each tree identified
from the northwest landscape, our continuation ensues.

Entelechy
A perfect realization as opposed to a potentiality.
The state of being complete.
In vitalist philosophy, a vital force that propels
      one to self-fulfillment. It is also understood
      by many as the dynamic purpose that is coded within,
      a purposeful unfolding of what a thing is.
In Aristotle's philosophy, it's synonymous with
      completed actuality, where there is no further
      potentiality to be realized. The essence has been fulfilled.
The actualization of form-giving cause as contrasted
      with potential existence.
A hypothetical agency not demonstable by scientific methods
      that in some vitalist doctrines is considered
      an inherent regulating and directing force in the development
      and functioning of an organism.
The entelechy itself, by moving toward its destiny,
      fulfills its own nature as a consciousness.

This collection will be visualized in images with the roots
of specific trees, and the elves which inhabit them.
Within the next month, a lookbook of this collection
will be listed at the shop online as we continue to move forward.

Many times the older images I stumble upon across the

worldwideweb are anonymous or dragged out of the crevices.

The first image is unknown but I placed it there to show

the absolute fluidity of the image. The second is also unknown

and striking for what seems a costume. Third is Clara Tice 1908,

Isadora Duncan 1899, and Gertrud Arndt wraps up this

post of images which blink my eyes in history. These are real

people with real stories and surreal moments captured

by what we now call vintage photography... or are they real at all?

The Little People Project, abandoning little people on the streets
since 2006.

"My 'Little People Project' started in 2006. It involves the remodeling
and painting of miniature model train set characters, which I then
place and leave on the street. It is both a street art installation project
and a photography project. The street-based side of my work plays
with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to
be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography, and the titles I give these scenes aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour.
I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works."

Along a month ago, I was listening to the past podcast from

Electronic Explorations and heard what seemed to be the

newest, fresh mix from a gentleman name Ade Fenton.

The mix held on to my industrial vein the whole journey and

carries with me as a reminder that my roots are still as torn and

chaotic as they are smooth and warm. You can find this mix

located on the download Rob Booth with Ade Fenton. If you

enjoy an edge with your beat, this one is a keeper.

"Ade Fenton has been making music for the last 12 years,

establishing himself as a respected record producer and remixer

for artists including Gary Numan, Slash, IAMX, Niki Gravino,

Parralox & Motor. He has amassed over 30 EPs and remixes

on his own techno labels Advanced and Perverter,

as well as releases on some of the worlds leading techno imprints

such as Potential, Ground, Impact Mechanics, Gynoid, IF?,

Primate and Materials.

In 2006, he co-produced and co-engineered Gary Numan’s Jagged album,

released to huge critical acclaim and reaching number three

in the BBC indie chart. Fenton released his debut artist album

Artificial Perfect on his industrial electronic label Submission in 2007,

securing a UK Top 75 chart single with The Leather Sea

Mary Anne Hobbs
A DJ and music journalist from Garstang, Lancashire.
In the 1980s, she lived on a bus in a carpark
with the hard rock band Heretic before becoming a journalist
for Sounds Magazine at age 19. She later worked for
the New Musical Express magazine before going on to help
found Loaded Magazine. Hobbs got her break in radio at
BBC Greater London Radio, working alongside Mark Lamarr.

She then worked at XFM before BBC Radio 1. She shot a TV series
about global biker culture named Mary Anne's Bikes in Japan, America,
Russia, India, and Europe for BBC Choice and BBC World in 2003.
Mary was also was Master of Ceremonies at the Leeds Festival
between 1999 and 2003.

A fan of rock, metal, and motorbikes from an early age,
she fronted the Radio 1 Rock Show and the experimental/electronic
Breezeblock on BBC Radio 1 for fourteen years.
In July 2010, Mary announced she was leaving the BBC
and her last show was on September 9, 2010. She has accepted a new job
at University of Sheffield Union of Students.

She is a revolutionary woman and continues to grace our planet
with her strength of heart and endurance to bring music to the masses.

The Tomorrow Collective
formed in 2005 and is based in Vancouver, Canada.
The collective was formed by dance artists Mara Branscombe,
Katy Harris McLeod and Jennifer McLeish Lewis.
The collective is now run by Mara and Katy. Together they
continue the work of the collective which is to produce,
promote, create and perform new dance and multidisciplinary work.
The Tomorrow Collective is responsible for the creation
and production of the popular interdisciplinary performance series
Brief Encounters.

Brief Encounters is about the mixing of mediums
and the crossing of artistic cultures. The collective
created this event out of an interest in cross pollination
between art forms, audience education and the excitement
of creation under the gun. The result is the creation
and performance of cutting edge collaborative work
between artists who had likely not previously met,
let alone worked together. The pieces that emerge
from the Brief Encounters pairings fuse, cross over,
interrupt and co create new perspectives on artistic forms
and the relationships between them. To date,
The Tomorrow Collective has produced 156 different artists
in Vancouver over the 14 installments of Brief Encounters,
as well as 10 artists in Nanaimo.

from The Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
In 1997 Keith Carter was the subject of an arts profile

In 1998, he received Lamar University's highest teaching honor,

Henry Cyril Paget
Henry Cyril’s nickname was ‘The Dancing Marquess’,
and was probably used less than affectionately
by the rest of his family. He was born in 1875
and brought up in France, largely in the company
of theatrical people. These formative years
clearly instilled a deep love of showing off, and,
sure enough, his first fait accompli upon entering
the family seat at Plas Newydd was to convert
the centuries old chapel into a theatre. From 1901 onwards,
he staged a series of productions whose scale
and cost were boundless. Casts of 50 or 60 were clad
in luxurious, fantastic costumes and large amounts
of jewellery. Paget was especially fond of Aladdin,
and it is believed this light opera was the most performed
work by his company. He played the part of Pekoe,
and during the interval would perform his celebrated
Butterfly Dance. What this actually consisted of is unclear,
although large gossamer effect wings and huge clusters
of colourful jewels, and a great deal of running around
with arms flapping can be guessed at, hence The Dancing Marquess.

Rossum's Universal Robots
A science fiction play in the Czech language by Karel Capek.
It premiered in 1921 and is noted for introducing the term robot.

The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people
called robots. Unlike the modern usage of the term,
these creatures are closer to the modern idea of androids
or even clones, as they can be mistaken for humans
and can think for themselves.
They seem happy to work for humans, although that changes
and a hostile robot rebellion leads to the extinction of the human race.

There are descriptions of kneading troughs for robot skin,
great vats for liver and brains, and a factory for producing bones.
Nerve fibers, arteries, and intestines are spun on factory bobbins,
while the Robots themselves are assembled like automobiles.
Capek's robots are biological machines, but they are still assembled,
as opposed to grown or born.

A classification of European folk tales exists and was first published in 1910,
called the Aarne-Thompson classification system. The tales
are grouped by Animal Tales, Fairy Tales, Religious Tales, Realistic Tales,
Tales of the Stupid Ogre, Jokes and Ancedotes, and Formula Tales.
A breakdown of the system can be seen here.
The Aarne-Thompson system catalogues some 2500 basic plots,
for countless generations, which European and Near Eastern storytellers
have built their tales. As Europeans and Near Easterners
travelled to the New World, the Far East, Africa,
and other distant places, their tales migrated as well.

The system was overhauled and extended by Hans-Jörg Uther in 2004.
He had a few criticisms for the system and listed these revisions:
1. Classifying narrative implies a scientific exactness
that does not in fact exist, and that works as an “ideal type”
only for certain texts in a limited region.
2. The descriptions of the tale types are in many cases
too short and are often imprecise. Many are sexist, in that
when the variants refer indiscriminately to a man or a woman,
the summaries assign men to respectable roles and women to ignoble ones.
3. Incorporating the so called “irregular types”,those in small print,
is a dubious practice. Often these types have a long and continuous distribution.
4. The emphasis on oral tradition often obscures the older,
written versions of the tale types.
5. The inclusion of oicotypes with only a few variants
expands the system unnecessarily and blurs the picture
of the general tradition. Often new types are proposed from
nationalistic sentiments, which should rightly be placed under existing types.
6. The Aarne-Thompson catalogue covers European folktale traditions unevenly:
for example, it lacks references to eastern and southern European tales.
7. The catalogue is oriented towards traditional genres and does not
take smaller narrative forms into consideration.
8. It often lacks references to relevant secondary literature.

Vladimir Propp, from Russia, analyzed many of his country's folk tales
and identified common themes within them. He broke down the stories
into analyzable chunks that comprised the structure of many of the stories.
He identified that “Five categories of elements define
not only the construction of a tale, but the tale as a whole.”:
1. Functions of dramatis personae
2. Conjuctive elements (ex machina, announcement of misfortune,
chance disclosure – mother calls hero loudly, etc.)
3. Motivations (reasons and aims of personages)
4. Forms of appearance of dramatis personae
(the flying arrival of dragon, chance meeting with donor)
5. Attributive elements or accessories (witch’s hut or her clay leg)
While not all stories will contain all of Propp's narratemes,
it is surprising to find stories that contain none,
and many modern books and movies fit nicely into his categories.
His breakdown of the categories can be seen here.

This summary does not even begin to touch on the vast amount
of folk tales throughout all the world. It is a brief summary to
European and Russian tales.

Two artists that live in a great section of Los Angeles,
with their dogs Max & Milo, and cats, Willow & Ruby.
Rufus works in tin, wood, and fabric, doing mostly assemblages
with found objects. Paco is a painter by trade,
and works with mixed media, and also finds assemblage
his favorite type of art.
"The Boys", as they are known, are always on the lookout
for findings of all kinds. There is no such thing,
as something that can't be turned into art.

Denishawn School of Dance
The Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts,
founded in 1915 by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn in Los Angeles,
California, helped many perfect their dancing talents.
Some of the school's more notable pupils include Martha Graham,
Doris Humphrey, Charles Weidman and silent film star Louise Brooks.
The school was especially renowned for its influence on ballet
and experimental modern dance.
In time, Denishawn teachings reached another school location, as well,
Studio 61 at the Carnegie Hall Studios. Because St. Denis and Shawn
believed that all dance techniques were valid and instructive,
the school offered classes in Oriental, Spanish, and primitive dance;
the fundamentals of ballet; their own innovative techniques; and, later,
the modern dance techniques that had been developed in Europe by Rudolf Laban.

Every way that any human being of any race or nationality,
at any period of human history, has moved rhythmically to express himself,

Among dancers and early motion picture performing community
there existed a very strong belief
in the ideals of the physical culture movement,
of physical perfectibility, bodily beauty, hygiene,
and expressive sexuality. Some, Isadora Duncan, Ted Shawn,
Annette Kellerman, Margaret Edwards, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr.,
were messianic exhibitionists intent on demonstration
to any public that would look the splendor, the human physique.
Edwin Bower Hesser in his own distinctly suspect way
latched on to certain of these convictions.
From 1923 until the mid 1930s he edited and supplied imagery
for as many as seven art magazines designed for art students
concerned with problems of the human form.
His brief stint of study at the Art Institute of Chicago

"Esotika Erotica Psychotica began as a film review blog by Mike Kitchell on January 2nd of 2007.
He started to blog with the eventual goal of having a website
that would serve as a sort of "platform" for people and information
pertaining to the particular blend of film that he was fascinated by;
namely, that which combined sex, horror, art, and experimentation.
The necessity for the website was felt due to a discontent
with the prevalance of genre film review sites
that would often overlook or dismiss the so called "pretentious" films,
and "art film" review sites that would ignore the "low brow" genre films.
Since he felt the most important films were the films
that were brilliant combinations of the two, he decided
that a remarkably nobrow approach was necessary.
The necessity for a new website also grew out of the fact
that many internet based review sites were primarily DVD review sites.
He has a major appreciation for DVDs (obviously),
but DVDs aren't relevent without the films that they hold."

"Esotika references "esoteric", meaning in this context,
of course, obscure. The films applauded on the Esotika site
are often fairly obscure, or at least relatively unknown, films.
Erotica clearly references the erotic and sexual content
in many of the films discussed.
Psychotica brings to mind the idea of a sort of "psychosis",
which in film can relate to a very "free" or "experimental"
method of narrative, imagery, or really anything.
Those three signifiers together produce, at least, we would hope,
the idea of what makes an Esotika film an Esotika film."

Bicycles and Biker Girls

Back then, the bicycle was the fastest vehicle on Earth.
Bike races were the NASCAR of the day. Thousands of spectators.
Indoor races at Madison Square Garden, etc.
Bikes also became a huge symbol of freedom for the new woman
and feminism in general.
They played a major role in women starting to wear pants.
The best cyclist in the world at this time was Major Taylor,
who is considered to be the first black athlete
to ever be a world champion in any professional sport.

As Mrs. Reginald de Koven wrote for Cosmopolitan magazine in August, 1885,
"To men, rich and poor, the bicycle is an unmixed blessing,
but to women it is deliverance, revolution, salvation.
It is well nigh impossible to overestimate the potentialities
of this exercise in the curing of the common and characteristic ills of womankind, both physical and mental, or to calculate the far reaching effects
of its influence in the matters of dress and social reform ."

By allowing women the feeling of freedom, mobility,
and independence, the bicycle helped to fundamentally transform
social relations between the sexes. Not only did the bicycle
play a large role in freeing women from the restraints
of constricting fashions (trading long skirts and petticoats for shorter outfits, bloomers, and gaiters), it changed the idea
of female beauty by dispelling the myths of women fragility
and helplessness. The early women’s liberation movement,
found in the bicycle, a vehicle for change;
as the famous women emancipation advocate Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton proclaimed:
“Woman is riding to suffrage on a bicycle.”

When deciding to push forward with this journal and reach out
to interview extraordinary people, the choice was for a soldier
of our time. There are many wars happening right now and they
are not with guns, power, or economic gain. They begin at the
core of humanity. Renee McGurk decided to share her thoughts
with my queries and send over images from her repertoire.

How did you happen to decide on photography as your medium?

My mother never had a camera and I felt years of my life had gone by
undocumented, so in college I got myself a Polaroid to help me
remember. I had wanted to take a photography course at the time but my
schedule was filled up with straight academics, especially science.

After graduation and while working as a lab tech at Northwestern
University, I finally signed up for photography and got myself a
proper camera. The thrill of seeing how my pictures turned out in the
darkroom was addictive. I took two courses at Northwestern and two at
The Evanston Art Center and teamed up with friends, Joseph Witkowski,
Frank Tamas and Jennifer Brown to form a group called Inpatient
Artworks. This collaboration resulted in three gallery shows and a
dozen short films. As I became a film buff, my focus switched to
storytelling and I took up digital videography in earnest. Making
movies was time consuming, expensive and required a great deal of
teamwork. After a couple years including participation with local
filmmakers Group 312 and a TV episode on Channel 19 CAN TV, I
abandoned ship. I took a stab at creative writing, first with a
screenplay, later with short stories as part of a writer’s group and
even tried my hand at some song writing. Several years went by with
virtually no creative output until I was given a digital camera as a
gift this past January…

Your images embody moments of sophisticated intensity.
How do you choose the objects, people, moments that you photograph?

When I first started taking pictures, I had two main interests: people
and abstracts. I wanted to recreate the kind of beauty I saw in old
black and white films, eternal female beauty to be more specific. My
sister Annie was my favorite model, not only because she radiated
glamour but also because she was close and willing. I was a big fan of
sci-fi films and chemistry -this resulted in a series of abstracts
called Microcosmos- tricks of light, oil and vinegar that became
imagined spaces and places resembling outer space or the inner space
of human bodies. In an effort to force my photos into groups of
series, I somehow got this notion of comparing/contrasting black and
white with color images. All of my original series played with this
concept- an unfortunate compromise.

These days I am much less organized or conceptual. I wander around the
streets and lakefront with the camera functioning as my eyes. I'm
drawn to bright colors, geometric shapes, water droplets, storm clouds
and other details I would generally miss if I didn’t have my camera.
I’ve started a slowly growing series of lost or discarded objects.

How do you describe your photographic world?

I tend to think photographs reflect unique perspectives similar to the
way dreams reflect personal experiences and levels of consciousness;
there’s a correlation there but I lack the ability to dissect it
further.

Can you give an insight into your next project?

To be honest I have no idea what my next project will be. I consider
myself a student of digital photography and my only goal at the moment
is to master the technique.
